portalmania (or Portal Mania as it was then known) started life as a general information portal in 2000. If you're interested it can still be seen here (opens in a new window). The idea behind Portal Mania was to bring users a huge amount of information on anything and everything. One of the areas of focus was to help people build their own website, including authoring HTML. Other topics covered include business articles, a web directory, film reviews, news, book reviews and more.
However, the portal was fairly small and after just over a year it was time to specialise. It was then that "portalmania - the book portal!" was born, which is of course what you can see now.
The basic idea behind portalmania is to cover as much as possible about books. Hence you will not just find book reviews on the site, but book news, a book directory, author biographies, publisher information and more!
Yes but why? Well, as anyone who reads books knows, there are more authors and books out there than you can shake a stick at. And readers tend to find a few good authors they're really into and stick to them... But think of the good reading you're missing out on! So hopefully you'll have a look around the site and read a review that makes you think, "Yes, I reckon I should give that a go" and enjoy something new. If so, portalmania has done its job.
So what are you waiting for? Get reading!
Biography
This section includes both biographies and autobiographies. There is a fairly diverse spectrum of people
covered, including Kurt Cobain, Hitler & Stalin and Mineko Iwasaki (a famous Geisha)! Hopefully you'll
enjoy the variety...
Comedy (Humour)
Books that will, if the author has got done his job, make you laugh! This section includes books that could
go in other areas, such as Tom Holt and Terry Pratchett. However, I've always felt that these belonged in a
humour rather than a fantasy section.
Fantasy
Speaking of fantasy! If Trolls, Orcs, Elves, Halflings and Giants are your thing, this is where you want to
be. You will find reviews on books by authors such as J.R. Tolkien, George R.R. Martin (highly recommended),
Raymond E. Feist and others.
Horror
Like things that go bump in the night? If so the horror section has reviews on books by authors such as
Stephen King, Clive Barker and Dean R. Koontz to name a few.
Murder/Mystery
Fancy yourself as a part-time detective? A regular Sherlock Holmes? The murder/mystery sections has thrillers,
whodunits and all the rest. The authors covered include Bret Easton Ellis, Boris Starling and Robert Ludlum.
War/History
This section is split in two, fiction and non-fiction. Either way you'll find books that are
about or based in the past. So if history and war and warriors is your thing you should find something to
please here.
More reviews...
From here you will find reviews for books that don't fit into any of the above. This section is split
into sub-categories, so don't worry, it's not a complete disorganised mess!
The sub-categories include:
Society, Politics & Philosophy
