Please note, this review pertains to the third book in the series, so if you haven't read the others then please see the first review: A Game of Thrones.

It was with much anticipation that I approached this third instalment in the A Song of Ice and Fire series. Much has gone before, and I had many theories on what might be to come. However, I was inevitably wrong. I don't wish to say too much about the story, in case I give something away. But I will say that Martin gives life to his characters, and is as happy as ever to take it away from them.

This is an excellent instalment and one that sees much development of certain characters. For example, Jon Snow gets more "air-time" as does Jamie Lannister. The development, in particular, of Jamie as a character is welcome, it brings both extra depth and in places humour to the story.

Them aside, you will get the usual appearances such as Sansa, Tyrion, Daenerys (and her dragons and blood riders of course), as well as others. Speaking of Daenerys, she is another character who is becoming more interesting, as she grows into her role of power and as she slowly starts to flex her muscles.

I'm still no closer to working out how this will all end, at time of writing there was still the second part to this book to read and as yet unpublished 2 further volumes (books 4 and 5). My guess is that the characters (or players? It is the Game of Thrones), will be slowly whittled down until there is some form of massive climax and possibly (probably) battle, but who knows?
