Jack Torrance and his family have been going through troubled times. He lost his job through alcohol, so when his friend found there was an opportunity for work their troubles appeared to be over, at least for a while.

However, the job was to look after an old hotel over the winter where they'll be cut off from the rest of the world. The last family that had taken job all died tragically. The husband lost his mind and killed them all.

So Jack, his wife Wendy and Daniel (their 5-year-old son) all pack and depart for the winter. But it doesn't take long before the hotel appears to take on a mind of its own. Jack can hear it. And it wants him to bring his son, who has special gifts (he shines) into the fold...

This is an excellent book by Stephen King that keeps you enthralled. It has also been made into a fairly good film, but to fully appreciate the story you need to read it.
