Murder/Mystery and Thriller Book Reviews

Boris Starling: Messiah

Red is a detective. And a very good one at that. He has an ability to get inside the minds of criminals which helps him anticipate, solve the riddles and put the murderers in jail. However, a new serial killer is stalking the streets of London. He commits the most violent crimes and leaves nothing, no finger prints, no DNA, no evidence. If a murderer leaves nothing at two crime scenes they're very lucky. Any more is miraculous. So Red and his hand picked team of detectives need to go one better. Divine inspiration.

All of this set against failing marriages, a media frenzy centred around the killings and betrayal. An interesting sub plot is introduced early which heightens and strengthens the overall story. Bringing new levels of intrigue into the mix. The characters are well thought out and have plenty of meat in them. Even if Detective Superintendent Red Metcalfe is some what a cliché, good cop/bad cop rolled into one who is so focused on his job it's tearing his marriage apart, etc. etc. However the sub plot thickens him out a bit more and adds just enough oomph! so that it doesn't detract from the story.

The book is well thought out which keeps you guessing. While at the same time showing you all the facts and clues as they become apparent. I felt this highlighted how much police work is based on interpretation. One fact, 2 or more explanations! So read the book and find out if an old saying is true, it takes a killer to catch a killer...
