Bernard Cornwell: Scoundrel

Paul Shanaha (Boston-Irish decent) is an arms runner for the IRA, or at least was. He was accused of being a CIA agent and accusation is all it takes in the lawless world of terrorism to cause fear. So the calls stopped and he had to find more salubrious work as a marine surveyor.

However, after years of isolation from the cause he’s being asked to do a job for the IRA. A big job, that involves transporting a lot of gold to America. Gold that’s to be turned into missiles so their furry can be unleashed on mainland Briton.

Alternatively, Paul could steel the gold and live a happy man, assuming of course he can outwit the IRA, CIA, British Intelligence and the infamous Palestinian terrorist il Hayaween…

Scoundrel is a very good book with plenty of twists and turns to keep you happy (some of them more obvious than others but who cares!). It has been written convincingly, with good pace and with Cornwell’s usual flair for character composition and facts.

Unfortunately I think this book might be out of print, but it’s worth looking around for a second-hand copy…
